Hi guys!

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving? I missed y’all! I know I haven’t posted in forever. I’ve been a little busy… starting a business!

As many of you know I’ve been a dietary vegan for almost 7 years now, but just about two years ago I made the choice to transition my entire lifestyle. This meant strictly vegan and cruelty-free products in all categories: beauty, fashion, home, etc. To be honest the transition was so much more difficult than I expected! Every time I ran out of a product I had to search the internet for cruelty-free alternatives, which were usually not easily or immediately accessible. I searched for a website that aggregated all vegan products, so that I could shop all of my essentials in one place, but failed to find a desirable option. So.. I decided to create it!!

My new business - The Vegan Warehouse - is an online shopping destination for all things vegan:) We sell vegan and cruelty-free beauty products, makeup, and home products. Also, a fashion section is coming soon (think vegan leather goods!). The goal is to have a huge market place of vegan and cruelty-free essentials to make it easy and affordable for everyone to find what they need.

Please check it out and give me your feedback! The website is still in its growing stages, but your support means everything!

PS. We are having a holiday sale going on right now, so it’s the perfect time to shop:)

dontnuketheducks:

I want to tell you guys a story.

A few years ago, I came out to my mom the morning after my senior prom. She was surprised, then quiet, then asked what my real orientation was. I said, “I have no idea, but I like this one girl.” She was a little confused, but she kissed me and said, “As long as she makes you happy.” For the next few weeks, she asked a lot of questions: when did I realize? What was my new girlfriend’s orientation? What was the word for this or that? I WAS happy, right?

Fast forward about two years. My mom sits me down and tells me that she needs my help with her next book. She’s been writing middle-grade girls’ books (like, 9-14 range) since I was eight, and she says she has an idea that she really, really wants to get right. It follows the plot of Romeo and Juliet, she says, and the main character is a twelve-year-old girl realizing she has a crush on another girl when they put on the play for English class.

Fast forward another year to now. STAR-CROSSED is about to come out, and it is absolutely amazing.

image

My mom has poured her heart and soul into making sure this is a positive thing for kids to read. I’ve been reading and editing and helping with this book since its first draft and I’ve been, metaphorically and sometimes literally bouncing up and down on my heels, waiting to be able to tell people about it. It’s beyond sweet, and there’s a ton of Shakespeare and humor and goofy preteen drama and twelve-year-old girls flirting and Star Wars jokes and a glossary of Shakespearean insults in the back (yes, really), and it’s just so fun and positive and smart and I want to show it to every kid I know.

This book is for LGBT kids, written by a mom who has asked questions and done her research and tried as hard as she possibly could to make her own queer kid feel safe and loved and valid, and it REALLY shows. Mattie (the cutie on the left) and Gemma (the cutie on the right) are given space to learn about themselves, and ultimately they don’t have to figure themselves out right away or come out to everyone at once or choose a label. They’re kids. It’s okay to still be figuring things out. It’s okay.

Fun facts:

  • My mom said from the beginning she wanted both girls on the cover to make it clear what the book was about; then when they got the final artwork and Mattie’s hair was short, my mom wrote back and asked the artist to do the hair over to make it as obvious as possible that Mattie is a girl.
  • When a few people started buzzing about Mattie being the youngest bisexual protagonist they’ve seen, she went back and changed passages to confirm that Mattie likes boys and girls.
  • When I asked for a happier and less ambiguous ending scene, she set Mattie and Gemma up on a frigging date.

It comes out on March 14, 2017. Please join me in GETTING HYPE FOR STAR-CROSSED <3

I’ve had—and continue to have—a long, perilous journey in figuring out what works for my acne-prone, sensitive, and ever-fickle dry-to-oily skin. If I use the wrong products, I break out in a rash that I can only describe as alligator skin (literally, the scales of the reptile form on my face). I’m usually not one for testing out new skin care because I’m legitimately afraid of the outcome, but about two months ago I realized I needed to reevaluate my face moisturizer.

I’d been using Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion for well over five years, and while it mostly did its job (aside from when my face was inhumanly dry), I realized it was time to find one that catered to my face instead of easily being able to be slathered over my whole body. So, I put my testing fears aside, and tried out four different moisturizers— from high-end to drugstore, from specialized for acne to SPF 30— in four weeks. The simple conclusion: Two worked and two really, definitely didn’t. Keep reading to find out which ones I’m endorsing for problematic skin and which I’d say let sit on the shelf.

The Number One

My Go-To Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin Is Budget-Friendly

CeraVe

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Face Lotion with Sunscreen

$13.49 (was $14.99) at Target

Folks, this is the cheapest one I tried and I. Am. Overjoyed. The lotion is, as it says, ultra-light. If I can feel a lotion on my face or the stickiness, it’s not going to work. CeraVe’s effortlessly seeped into my skin, no problem. I used about two pumps each morning to cover my face and my neck. My face can get extremely oily as the day goes on, but that didn’t happen during the entire week. I’m chalking that up to one of the main ingredients: hyaluronic acid, a natural molecule that retains moisture. Plus, this product has SPF 30 already embedded into the formula so if I end up skipping my extra sunscreen step, all is not lost (and it doesn’t leave a white cast!). 5 out of 5 stars for being A1.

My Go-To Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin Is Budget-Friendly

Biossance

Biossance Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer

$52 at Biossance

OK, I know it’s expensive, but it actually has its benefits. I’d never used a gel moisturizer before, and the first times applying it I did feel like I had a film over my skin. But after using it for a few days, I stopped feeling it, and my skin soaked up the product—squalane in action. It says to apply morning and night, but I only applied it in the morning, which may be why my skin didn’t look noticeably brighter in the mornings like the product boasts. At first I only took product from the top of the container to keep my hands out, but after a while I started to use the back of my nails to scoop it out. I only covered about two of my nails and that transferred to my face and neck. The only drawback about this moisturizer was that I felt like my skin got oily as the day went on. By the time I would come home, I could blot with an entire napkin. 3.8 out of 5 stars for oiliness and price.

Couldn’t Even Go a Whole Day

My Go-To Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin Is Budget-Friendly

Aveeno

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Fragrance-Free Moisturizer

$18.99 at CVS Pharmacy

During the periods when Lubriderm would go missing or was too big to travel, I would use Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Facial Moisturizer. I didn’t necessarily like it due to its thick nature, but I used it. So testing out this other product made me apprehensive for the same reason. But it was ultra-calming and perfect for sensitive skin, a.k.a. me, so I went for it. Well, it didn’t work out. I did about two pumps into my hand, and once I applied the product, I could severely feel it on my face. Truly, I wasn’t surprised because this is what I experienced with their other product. However, when I looked in the mirror, I saw a huge white cast across my forehead and completely white eyebrows. The product only has SPF 30, so I was confused as to why it wasn’t seeping into my skin and instead, remaining on the surface. I rubbed it in more, but the white residue stayed on my face. I waited a bit to see if it soaked in, but after no success, I washed it off. Even if it weren’t for the white cast, it sat way too heavily on my skin. 1 out of 5 stars for sunscreen and heaviness.

Dermalogica

Dermalogica Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion

$22 at Dermalogica

I had such high hopes for this moisturizer after hearing the accolades of Dermalogica, but leave it to my sensitive skin to find the worst in brands. The Clear Start section of Dermalogica is tailored to clearing acne, which I have a lot of the time. This specific lotion has both squalane and hyaluronic acid for hydration, along with ginger, orange, and grapefruit to soothe and protect the skin. All sounds good, right? No. I squeezed about a quarter-size amount of product into my fingers and rubbed it on my face and neck. Immediately my skin started to burn. I wasn’t too freaked out because sometimes this happens but goes away within 20 seconds (not normal, I know). But after a few minutes, the burning continued, and I couldn’t deal with it, I had to wash it off. After experiencing such a strong reaction, I reached out to dermatologist Purvisha Patel, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, to find out why it might have happened.

“This sounds like a reaction specifically to the orange peel oil. Oil of bergamot is the contact allergen, and it was discontinued for years in skin care, but with the surge of natural ingredients, it’s back on the market. The salicylic acid helped with absorption of the bergamot allergen. Also, grapefruit and citrus oils can be allergens for sensitive-skin patients.” That all sounds pretty spot-on, and even if that’s not the specific reason, I’ll be staying away from oil of bergamot from now on. 0 out of 5 stars for burning sensation.

My girl @trainingtoheal tagged me to post 9 positive life events from 2016!

1. The book that I’ve been working on for 5+ years was finally published! This had to be one of THE most incredible experiences that’s ever happened to me in my entire life.

2. I met my incredibly precious and amazing nephew for the first time–I didn’t even know I could love someone as much as I love him.

3. I traveled internationally! I was finally able to travel around Canada, which had been on my bucket list for ages. I still want to go back and do even more exploring!

4. I didn’t get to complete my ultra marathon like I had wanted because of a recurring injury, however this injury has led me to yoga and I’m choosing to look at this as a positive experience. Ultras will still be there when I’m 100%! ;)

5. I was fortunate enough to live in Sedona (one of my favorite places on the entire planet) for over one whole month.

6. I got to hang out with ALL of my siblings and mom in one place, all together, which hadn’t happened in five years.

7. I created and currently maintain two business Instagram and Facebook accounts. (Soooo not easy for me!)

8. Tied up some loose ends.

9. I feel like in 2016, I truly stopped caring what anyone else thinks of me. I’m just living my truth, doing my best to try to help others, and living as compassionately as possible.

Thanks for the fun questions, AJ! I tag anyone else who wants to share some positive things about their 2016! :)
